Halotel, officially known as Viettel Tanzania Public Limited Company, is a mobile communications provider in Tanzania. Established in October 2015, it offers voice, messaging, data, and mobile financial services across all 26 regions of the country. Halotel is owned by Viettel Group, a state-owned enterprise from Vietnam.
The company has invested significantly in Tanzania’s telecommunications infrastructure, deploying over 18,000 km of fiber optic cables. This extensive network coverage aims to provide services to areas that were previously underserved.
In addition to traditional mobile services, Halotel offers HaloPesa, a mobile money service that enables subscribers to send and receive money quickly and securely.
As of March 2023, Halotel has approximately 8.1 million subscribers, representing a 13% market share in Tanzania’s competitive telecommunications sector.
The name “Halotel” combines “Halo,” meaning “light of the sun,” with “tel” for telecommunications, symbolizing the company’s commitment to bringing brighter connectivity to Tanzania.
